Some see the incoming rush of cars advertising fueleconomy of 40 mpg and aren’t impressed, commenting that cars were just as efficient years ago. In honor of Earth Day, we decided to take a closer look at that theory, compiling a list of the Top 10 most efficient 2001 model year mass production vehicles, along with Motor Trend test data and safety scores. The way fuel economy numbers were calculated has changed since these 2001 vehicles went on sale, meaning the modern mpg numbers are much lower than the figures you’ll see on the Monroney.
